PERSONALITY OVERVIEW

Tony is a complex character that constructs a set of walls and masks to protect himself- a sort of legend beneath the man if you will. Tony puts on a front for nearly everyone he knows save for Pepper Potts and James Rhodes. Rhodey and Pepper, his Rhodey and Pepper, the three amigos, the ones who knew him best. Those beside Pepper and Rhodey who are lucky enough to get to know Tony begin to see that the mask he wears for everyone else is not who Tony Stark is. In most ways, they are antonyms of each other.

Tony is a walking talking antonym He is a successful socialite, being able to navigate a cocktail party or a boardroom like he owns the place. He is cavalier and glib, playing like nothing bothers him in the least, but in reality, he feels things more deeply than most. The Iron Man armor is a physical manifestation of the many masks Tony wears on a daily basis. He is boastful about his accomplishments and virtues and successes usually in the most ego-centric way possible. A prime example would be the Stark Expo where Tony made his entrance in full armor with a squad of cheerleaders. He is always one to put on a show. The ego and attitude are just masking to cover up the fact that he is riddled with guilt over how his family amassed their fortune -by selling arms- his guilt embodies itself in self-doubt. Tony wonders if he should have seen things that Obidiah was doing before they happened, that maybe there was something that he could have changed and done differently, and also wonders if he deserves to be happy or have friends.

Tony comes off as arrogant and self-assured, but in reality, he is riddled with anxiety and PTSD, thanks to being held captive in Afghanistan, and learning that a person that he trusted had betrayed him so brutally. Steve and SHIELD accuse him of only being in it for himself, not caring about others, being self-centered and narcissistic. Tony proves in the Battle of New York that he is the one to make the sacrifice play, not even thinking twice about flying a nuclear warhead through a portal to avoid the destruction of Manhattan. This international incident triggered his PTSD big time and left him riddled with nightmares.

The real Tony Stark is a ball of issues. Insecurities, guilt, and doubt. He lives in a world of self-isolation, often feeling that the world would be better off without him, without Iron Man, especially after Sokovia. He thrives in the company of his AI’s and mourns their loss. His need for checks after Sokovia and Ultron is what prompted him to the push the Accords so hard. He lost everything, including Pepper and almost Rhodey because of Iron Man. The Accords on some level were his way to fix them.

Tony is a futurist, not willing to wallow in the past, but instead working to make sure that he is not a repeat offender of past mistakes. His need to prevent tragedy often results in making matters worse not better, but he still keeps trying anyone. Tony is not a man to quit or admit defeat quickly. He is a genius, and that is his real gift. Tony always perseveres under physical and emotional distress. He is a generous man, despite all of the trauma his has gone through. He funds the Avengers when Shield falls, gifts a group of MIT students research grants just because he can; he even allows Steve to break the former Avengers out of prison because it is the right thing to do, even it might put him at risk.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

What skills does your character bring to the situation?: As Tony would say himself, he is a genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, but the billionaire playboy aspects probably won't help him much here. His is, however, a genius in both the metaphorical and practical applications of the word. He has the uncanny ability to make the best of any bad situation. He has been in enough of them over the years. He wears a suit of armor, but his brain is probably his greatest weapon. He will be able to adapt, and reason his way through things. He showed his ability to adapt, and his genius in canon when his armor malfunctioned, and he was forced to reinvent it, relearn it's systems--and rebuild it without access to his money, his high technology, or his support systems."

He is also a natural born leader, willing to take charge in most situations. It is in his nature to lead, and to act without thinking about the consequences until after. A prime example would be taking a nuclear warhead into space without any thought about his own life. Tony would not be considered an empathetic or sympathetic man by any means, especially to those he doesn't know. He does, however, like to fight for the underdog and help those out who can't help themselves.

Explain how your character would react to the following:

  • Discovering that their memories may have been tampered with: Tony is all about control. There have been many times in his life that Tony lost control of his life, so he values having control over everything in his life exponentially. His mind and memories mean more to Tony than anything else in the world. He will not under any circumstances be happy with having his memories tampered with. He was kidnapped while traveling in Afghanistan, finding out later, by someone that he loved and trusted like a second father. When that happened, Tony became all about control, almost to the point of obsession. He was shot in the chest and an electromagnetic put in his chest to prevent shrapnel from killing him all without his knowledge or consent. Tony thrives on control, and the lack of control over the situation he finds himself in will drive him crazy until he understands it. Losing his memories if that were to happen would bother Tony more than not being able to leave.

  • Having to do physical labor to survive: Tony is not a stranger to working for what he needs. He usually has unlimited resources to work with, so that part will be new. He may balk at having to do physical labor, but he will do it. He builds things as a hobby; he finds enjoyment in getting his hands dirty. Tony, not being able to choose the electromagnet that was placed in his chest, chose instead to build his first arc reactor to power the Mark I Iron Man suit by his own hand rather than wait for someone to do it for him. Tony is not the type of man to sit on his laurels and wait. He is a man on the move, a man of action. Working with his hands is definitely something that relaxes Tony and something that he thrives in. Tony is fine as long as he has something to do. Idle hands make for an idle mind is a phrase that would definitely apply to him.

  • Having to share resources with others: Tony by the very definition of who he is, does not play well with others, or so he says. That is where the masks come into play. His selfish, self-centered "mine" attitude is just a mask. Tony cares about other people more than he cares about himself at times. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising at all to see him taking care of others needs before his own. He may need a guardian angel to make sure he eats. By his philanthropist nature, however, it is his way to give to others, most often while making a big spectacle of it. An example would be the gift that he bestowed on the students of MIT. He will be apt to share with others, especially with those who can't fend for themselves. He has a soft spot for people that don't have as much as he does, mostly because of the guilt he feels over selling weapons to make money.

  • Being unable to leave the area: Usually, Tony has the freedom to go where he wants and do what he wants. He is Tony Stark, and Starks, by their very nature do not like limitations. Tony spent some time in captivity in Afghanistan, thanks to Stane, so being trapped will bring forward his PTSD and his fear of being stuck. His kidnapping, his fear of water from being water boarded, and his cluster phobia all made worse by his very much nondormant PSTD will make Tony feel like he is crawling out of his skin. The panic attacks that he experienced after the Chitauri will most likely become more pronounced, although he will do his best to hide it. He doesn't really acknowledge that things bother him on an emotional level. His flippancy tends to come out more when he is covering up real feelings.

  • Doing without modern conveniences and technology and being around tech more advanced than they're used to: Tony's entire being and life revolve around technology. Not having technology could be both good and bad, Tony needs tech almost as much as he needs to breathe. He tinkers to keep himself out of his head, so not having it will give him a lot of time to think. On the other hand, giving Tony access to technology that he doesn't understand could be very, very bad. A good example of that is Ultron. He didn't understand the Tesseract, but tinkered, despite warnings, and created a deadly super computer that destroyed JARVIS, and almost the world. Tony is definitely a futurist, so being trapped in an Edwardian-era island will bring out his snark. He will belittle and make fun of the technology on one hand, and on the other hand, he will try and find ways to improve it. He discovered an element based on plans created by his father. He is going to hate not having every convenience available to him.

  • Being separated, possibly permanently, from loved ones and their previous life, including loss of powers, if applicable: The loss of Technology will affect Tony more than the loss of any loved one, with the exception on Rhodey. He doesn't believe that he is worthy of anyone loving him, so he will probably think that everyone will be better off without him. He will feel the loss of tech almost like an addict feels the loss of a drug. It is funny because Tony should be feeling the loss of people, not AI's, but that shows Tony Stark's distorted worldview. Tony is Iron Man, a superhero, something that he literally sacrificed everything for. He lost his relationship with Pepper, and he was ok with that because he had the suit and the Avengers. The loss of his suit, which he deems more important than his personal relationships will be devastating.

    2. Tony on the non-sexual intimacy meme

    3. TDM thread with Kate Kelly

    4. Tony wandered through the empty halls of the former Avengers training facility without purpose. Tony, for the first time in his life didn't know what he was doing. It struck him almost as hard as getting hit over and over by one of his repulsors as it bounced off Steve's shield. Steve's shield- wasn't that a joke? His father had labored over that shield tirelessly and after everything, he still referred to it as Steve's shield.

Apparently, the joke was on him. Sure, he had the shield, but what good did a crappy piece of Vibranium do him when the person who carried it was gone? All the talk of Tony being a narcissistic asshole was just that all talk. Yeah, he was narcissistic and an asshole at times, but only because he had to be because it was expected of him. He couldn't let the world down could he? The world could go to hell, though because his mom was murdered, and it sucked okay?

It more than sucked, but sucked was the only word that Tony could think of to express himself. It was funny actually for a man usually as verbose as Tony, and sucked was the best he could do.

"Hey Fri, what is another word for sucked," He asked JARVIS 2.0. He shook his head. "No, wait scratch that. What am I doing Fri? I'm better than this."

He finished his rounds of the complex, sinking heavily into the couch. He should be more upset that his father died, but it wasn't his death that bothered him. His father was an asshole, but his mother was beautiful and nurturing and everything good in the world. He felt justified in his anger at Steve, Bucky, hell the world. They killed his mom.
